Hi
I'm brand new to Linux.
I've been struggling with a new installation of SuSE 7.2 Pro for a while now. The installation itself went fine, but on booting the machine , LILO gives me a single "L" followed by screens-full of 02's. However, if I boot from CD1, and I choose "boot Installed System", it will indeed boot, and as soon as booting is complete (into KDE), I can remove the CD and everything seems to work.
After much web searching, I found that LILO error L means that the first stage boot loader has been loaded and started, but it can't load the second stage boot loader. This condition usually indicates a media failure or a geometry mismatch (that is, bad parameters in /etc/lilo/disktab).
The 02 means that the address mark was not found and an error occurred while reading the media.
The system consists of an Asus P3V4X motherboard, bios version 1005, and a brand new IBM 40gig ATA100 hard drive. There is nothing on the drive but the SuSE install.
I suspect that the problem is related to the bios settings on the motherboard, which is currently set to autodetect the hard drive. I have read everything I could find on the web and in the manuals regarding LILO and booting, but I can't find anything that addresses this specific issue. If anyone could point me in the right direction to sort this one out, I would appreciate it. Thanks.
