No. USB devices suck for throughput. And what would you do if you improved your hardware configuration later (more below)?
* Can I keep my phone modem installed with the cable modem? What are the caveats? I really hate to turn loose of the phone until I am confident of the cable.
Yes. None, except for space constraints. You'll be fine.
* I've seen some threads here about good/bad NICs. Is Acer OK?
I'd rather have Intel. About $30US for a PCI 10/100 interface, well-supported, and reliable as death or taxes, take your pick. My second choice would be a Kingston. Third is a Linksys. Kingston and Linksys can be found anywhere between $15-25, even at retail.
* I welcome any advice or warnings. I really dread installing this. The only instructions it came with are for MS.
Keep your head low, invest in a firewall of some sort (a Linksys EtherFast Cable/DSL Router is more than adequate), and never tell one of the trained monkeys on the other end of the tech support line that you run Linux. They'll have a siezure right then and there. -- -=|JP|=- Need a good geek? I'm unemployed!
