sax2 how to?

I'm on SuSE 7.1; KDE 2.2.1
What is the proper way to install a new video card with sax2? I can only get
sax2 to run inside KDE; but I can only get into kde with the old card. How
do I configure the new card while the old one is installed? I changed
inittab to come up in runlevel 3, then try to run sax2; but in runlevel 3
sax2 gets as far as printing SAX: startup, then blanks the screen and locks
up. I don't know how to get from here to there. Apparently SuSE doesn't use
the FX86Config file in /etc. Any advice will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
