Personaly I am not a great specialist in computer science. Just an end-user but I am using Linux about at 100% (99.8% because Canoscan 650U does not like Linux, shame to Canon.
I have the 656U, which *would* be a great scanner *if* it worked in Linux. I sent an email to their tech support telling them I switched to Epson and would not be buying more Canon products until they began to offer Linux drivers, or at least release the specs for the community to write drivers. I did not receive a reply.

Thank you for your E-mail inquiry.
The scanner was designed to operate within Windows 98, Windows ME or Windows 2000 operating systems. At this time Canon has not developed Linux drivers for our products. At such time that the drivers are available they will be posted on our websites.
I am sorry for any inconvenience this matter has caused you.
