It looks like I've sussed it.. In my resolv.conf file, I had misunderstood the 'search' and 'domain' entries, with the end result of having my domain name in the search part but my ISPs nameserver addresses. Now I'm not sure why this would cause the effect (explain anybody ?). but now that my file looks like this: domain albion search uklinux.net nameserver 195.92.195.94 nameserver 195.92.195.95 it appears to work.... Freesco is a linux router, that will run from a floppy (although I had a spare 540Mb drive to put it on, I acquired an old 486 with 16Mb RAM and bob's your uncle....
Anyway, back to the problem, whenever Seti finishes processing a unit, it tries to connect to setia site. On my set up, both the windows and SuSE7.3 machines access the internet through the Freesco router. The Windows machine works every time (there's a first!) but the linux machine will reply with a gethostbyname error message and try again in an hours time. The diallup connection drops after 5 minutes and the whole cycle repeats.
The only way round it is to start seti, it tries to connect (and fails) and then restart seti again (this time it works because the connection is already up)
Its almost seems that the linux box is too quick - can I slow down or delay the gethostbyname bit ?

What's FREESCO? Anyway, sounds like a DNS or routing error. Does your SuSE box run DNS and does it respond properly when you test it, i.e. nslookup www.microsoft.com

I have two main PC's, a 98 machine for the kids and games, and my 7.3 machine, which I use on a day to day basis. Both of which run Seti continuosly....
My connection to the internet is via an old 486 that I have which runs FREESCO. All the machines are connected via a hub.
The problem I have is that whilst the 98 machine will connect first time on completion of a work-unit, the SuSE box will fail with a gethostbyname message - resource not available message. Freesco then drops the connection until the next hourly attempt and the same thing happens. I have to stop Seti, start it, to initiate a connection, when it fails, restart Seti and as Freesco is now established, Seti will download the unit and its business as usual.
I'm told that there is nothing I can do in Seti, is there a way round this
?
many thanks
Pete
