Hi everyone.
Can we use smtp (eg under kmail) to send mail to machines on our lan? Yes, of course. Like can w98 Samba clients get it with outlook express? Not sure I understand the question. Samba is for file, print, etc. sharing. It's got nothing to do with email. If you mean, can it work in a similar way for email as outlook express does in the same way that samba offer file/print services to windows boxes, then, yes, again. Yast seems to say yes Where? we have a MX entry in our zone files. Zone files relate to DNS, that's something else. I have never had to edit a zone file to get mail to work. We can send from the server without errors but cannot recieve on the clients nor can they mail the server.
Any advice anyone.
Thanks, Steve.
Try this. Go to a linux box and 'telnet ip_address_of_mail_server smtp' onto your mail server, something like, telnet 192.168.1.1 smtp - If it comes back with an smtp connection you're probably in business. If not, well it could be a number of things. Try tail'ing the /var/log/messages file on the server with 'tail -f /var/log/messages' when you're trying to connect. To ask the obvious question, have you set up your mail server and started the smtp connection with SMTP = yes in /etc/rc.config? Andy
