I have to be very careful about how I advise you here, because I am not at all
expert on SuSE's initialisation scripts.  Also I use 7.0 and things may be
different in your version.

I have many files in rc2.d and rc3.d, including the hylafax files I mentioned. I
know that those files are used at different run-levels, but I am not sure if
they are actually read at boot-time - maybe someone else can help here please ? 
On the basis of my own limited knowledge it does seem strange and (perhaps),
important that those files are missing, but I do not know how that could come
about.  I can personally see no reason why Ghostscript should be the cause.

I will think about the problem, but for the moment I cannot help more.
