I'm curious to know if it would be worthwhile to upgrade from the original Geforce 256 (32MB) to one of the newer video cards with a 2x AGP motherboard? Or should I wait to get a 4x AGP motherboard and then get a new video card?
AGP throughput doesn't make much difference. Unless, of course, you are thrashing around hundreds of MBs in textures. Of which, of course, your framerate would suck anyway, so it matters little.
Not really true (just make sure to set your AGP aperture in the BIOS high enough. Our 3D visualiser (check www.jasongeo.com if you're really curious) sometimes does pump well over 64M of texture data to and from the card. AGP4 does help. (but having 64M on board does help a lot as well ;) )
make a whole lot of difference. If you really want to upgrade your mainboard (to Athlon), consider the budget ECS K7S5A for $60-65. It's got an on-board 10/100 NIC, AC97 audio, AGPx4 slot, and both SDR and DDR SDRAM slots. Quite a performer too.
Check if AGP4X is supported on that board. I do remember an issue with a low budget athlon board that gave AGP4X but at a too low voltage ... very fast .. esp in freezing your machine .. the fps you got stood for freezes per second ...
If "Moore's Law" dictates that processors double in performance every 18 months, "nVidia's Law" (or whatever) dictates that video controllers double in performance every 9 months. It seems that only ATI and nVidia can "keep up" nowdays in the consumer video controller market.
You tell me .. I got an NVidia geforce 256 for home fun when it was brand spanking new ... and now i have the feeling I bought an old pice of junk. Shit, videoboards these days get outdated between the moment you buy them and the moment you get the shrinkwrap of the box.
