In the KDE2 settings, as root, you must have selected a keyboard
layout. It overrides the usual keyboard settings, and everything in
~/.Xmodmap (the multi_key, for example) has disappeared.
To switch off the selected keyboard for KDE2/root and get the usual
keyboard back, in the file
/root/.kde2/share/config/kxkbrc
change the line "Use=true" to "Use=false".
Or you can remove the complete kxkbrc file. (It was created when you
selected the keyboard layout.)
If you ever select a KDE2 keyboard layout as user and you want to undo
this, do the same with the file ~/.kde2/share/config/kxkbrc.
