curious situation w/ paswords (7.3 )

This is weird , and very likely something that needs a tweak somewhere but
it wasn't immediately obvious ..
creating a neew user acount w/ the yast2 setup causes this message to appear
when I try inputing a password into the setup ... "passwords must be from 8
10 128 ? ( I think that is the larger number, it may be bigger ) characters,
and it wont let me go any further. ( I have a "standard " password to create
the user... it gets changed before the acount is "published to the jury" <g>
It's just faster to do it this way.) the problem that makes me think
something odd is happening , is I have passwords on this box set to 5-8
characters! And it is still set that way, Yast1 allows the creation w/ the
password...

Is this just another one of those occassional yast2 Oddities ?
or have I really muckled something somewhere ???

the laptop is off the network and off internet when I'm doing these "batch"
creations ... the user password which they see is randomly generated and must
be changed to activate the acount .. ( and the changes are also done offline
so there isn't any way for someone to grab an account and get into the system
should my usr creation password get known , or even widely known..., at least
I don't think there is ... Cafine is needed tho , I ran out of Jolt latte and
haven't had time to go get more <G>
Blondly,
j
