SuSE 7.3 printing

Using SuSE 7.3 as file servers for my network of W2k
and MacOS machines. What would be the best method of
connecting HP 6mp?
The 6mp is a postscript printer and lpr has worked for
me in the past, but not very well, as I had trouble
printing Illustrator documents (essentially
postscript) and the printer would lose its mind and I
would gets a lot of empty or nearly empty pages
printed out if it went haywire.
Is CUPS superior, or what?
