Hello Simon,

you're right, there is no .config file after a stock installation; running 
'make cloneconfig' in /usr/src/linux-2.4.4.SuSE generated one .config that 
is slightly different from the one you mentioned in /boot, the latest 
having 9 more config lines (adding IPSEC, loaded as a module, and its 
options). Both .config files are much different from archi386/defconfig.
