problems upgrading to 7.3

I am trying to upgrade my laptop from 7.2 to 7.3. I used the default upgrade
in YAST2 and things seemed to go as planned. However, when I try to start
KDE 2.2, the startup hangs. The console shows the message 'spurious 8259A
interrupt:IRQ7', and the cap=lock and scroll-lock indicator lignts flash on
and off. This continues 'forever' (I actually let it go all day today as I
had to go to work!) The computer is completely locked, and I can't get into
a text mode terminal or reboot. The only way to get out is to turn the
computer off and endure the fsck process on the next boot. I also tried
GNOME. This actually loaded and seemed to work ok for a while, but within a
few minutes exactly the same happened. The computer seems stable in text
mode if I don't get into a window environment.
The above problems are using the stock 2.4.10 kernel. I also tried going
back to the 2.4.5 kernel which I've been using in 7.2. This kernel is
patched for wn4linux. Wtih the 2.4.5 kernel, KDE works fine. However the
pcmcia system doesn't work, so I can't get any network connection. The
network (and modem) cards had worked fine with this kernel in version 7.2.
At this point I would really like to have a stable window evnvironment with
network support. I'm not particular about wich kernel!
Any suggestions greatly appreciated!
