Is there the equivalent of unix boot -s for single mode so I can reset the root password, or what is the best way to fix this.
There are several options here.
Firstly, at the lilo prompt, enter:
init S
and *hopefully* that should drop you into single user mode,
where you can issue the command:
passwd
and change the root password that way.
2. If you can still drop into single user mode, edit the
file (/etc/shadow) and delete the second field for
user "root" and then save the file. Then you can switch to
init 3 and type root as your login name and you won't need
a password.
3. You can use a rescue diskette, such as toms root/boot
http://www.toms.net/rb.
I hope that helps,
