Hi, I've compiled and install my own kernel for as long as I can remember, but I would like to try out SuSE's own, modular, 2.4.7 kernel. I look on their site and on the ftp site, and in the books, but I don't see any instructions on how to upgrade a SuSE kernel 'their way'. If anyone knows of such a document, please give a link. I tried upgrading the kernel version on a VMWare SuSE session, and it wouldn't boot :/, good thing that's why I was testing it there.
The way I do it is utilising yast 1, either download kernel from update section of ftp.suse.com or mirror through yast or as a seperate download. I usually do the yast way through package management, then install packages from relative directory or ftp site; as you exit, yast runs SuSEconfig which installs and compiles kernel. Once this is done in a konsole screen "mk_initrd" then "lilo" and your new SuSE kernel shall work, well maybe, but for your kernel update 2.4.7 which is SuSE 7.2 there is a module "reiserfs," if you use it, that needs to be added to the rc.config before "mk_initrd". I have found yast works great with SuSE specific created kernels or self created kernels from SuSE source.
