If LILO wouldn't now support lba32, you'd still need a small /boot partition to keep the kernel completely below the 1024 cylinder threshold. And for this /boot partition it wouldn't make sense to use reiserfs as you'd have to double its size for not much gain as e2fsck is blazingly fast on such a tiny partition. But as LILO does support lba32, it's only an issue on computers whose BIOS doesn't support lba32 and those are quite rare these days. On any moderately modern computer you are free to make /boot a normal sub directory.
