Has anyone managed to get the Winamp alpha 1 for linux to run? When I try, it just dies without showing any errors. I can't see anything useful in strace either. I have read accounts of people who have managed to use it, so I assume it's possible.
*Win*amp for Linux? Hmm... maybe Nullsoft should look into reviving the old X11Amp name or something. ;-) Any word on what Winamp does or should do that XMMS doesn't?
Thanks, Tim
I know, the same thought occurred to me. But many times when I install linux to win-using friends (happens more and more frequently, I'm happy to say) the most FAQ is "is there winamp". It is such a well-established trademark that I think using Linamp or something would be counter-productive. I've tested it now for a half hour or so, and it seems to run well. It crashed once and locked up once, but hey: it's alpha 1. It looks nice, but from a music listening experience I can see no reason to switch from xmms. Well, not entirely true. There could be one reason. It has a programming API that is bound to be used by many around the world called Wasabi. This, apparently, can be used to do a lot, and considering that it's a VM kind of thing, the win-version plugins or scripts can be used on linux as well. So if you're into that sort of thing, this could turn out to be very nice. Especially if they produce a plugin to play windows multimedia format (or whatever it's called this week). There aren't any plugins now that I could find (I didn't look very hard, I should add) but when they go Gold I can guarantee that there will be an abundance on shareware servers everywhere, if history is anything to go by And of course as a started out saying, it's incredible from a marketing standpoint, as winamp is one of the biggest selling points of a windows system, next to MS Office. Sorry if this got a bit long-winded. I didn't have time to make it shorter. :) regards Anders
