There are many solutions but I'll tell you what I am using.
I wanted to run an IMAP server since I wanted to be able to access my email
from all machines on my network as well as from work and store the mail on
the server. In the past I tried the UW-IMAP server but encountered too
many problems with it. Since then I switched to the Cyrus IMAP server.
Initially I built it myself but since SuSE was kind enough to provide RPMs
for 7.2 I switched to the SuSE built version.
The way my system is set up, the internal network accesses the IMAP server
via the standard port but the outside world can access the server only via
SSL. The standard port is blocked by the firewall. Cyrus also is nice
since it has sieve built in which allows me to create server side rules to
drop/reject/route mail messages.
The negative thing about Cyrus is that it is harder to setup then pop3 or
UW-IMAP but once it is up and running it is great.
