My understanding is if the firewire vendor adheres to the IEE1394 standard then Linux will support it. However, I have an OrangeMicro Firewire PCI card which uses the NEC chipset and does adhere to the (I forget the name) standard, yet my Suse 7.1 does not recognize it. I am still trying to resolve other issues to even get to this one. Maybe the newer disto does a better job. Babu --- jfweber@eternal.net wrote:

Hi Wizzards Spent some time looking thru the Suse hardware Database. but couldn't find anything about firewire .. HOwever, I also discovered that many things that I know are supported "out of the box" are not on the list... I hope this is because the entire database is being "updated"? At least it seems that way ... So I would greatly appreciated it if soemone could tell me if there is support for "fire-Wire" , and what sort of fire wire components might be supported? ( DVD readers , perhaps? Some vidiot cameras ? and other things having to do w/ cameras, video capture and suchlike things? Perhaps some of hte new "fire-wire" drives ? )
Any help anyone can give will be appreciated ? ( IF anyone beta testing 7.3 knows of items that may be related to video capture/editing and the like .. hardware of software, I'd love to know <G> ) I'm already salivating in advance of the European and US releases... All my updates in one spot (yay!) , at least until new things are found ( buglets, random features, etc) or should anyone , perhaps at the behest of M$ find a way to exploit something on a LINUX box .. well , we're watching for them <s>
Captain!!! deploy the ANTI M$ sheilds!! Full power to the shields !!! Deploy the "Black Hole" defenses... Captain, the invaders are weakening !!! They are withdrawing from the field .... YES, we've won this battle , troops, but the real WAR has just begun !! Everyone may stand down from battle stations, and have the Science officer report to my quarters, along w/the engineer... and perhaps the Psyops Officer as well. One must plan out next effort very carefully .
