As soon as LILO starts you get the "boot:" prompt and the system pauses for a
few seconds before booting the kernel. Just type "linux text expert mem=16M"
and hit return. On SuSE 7.2 you get the graphical boot screen and can type
the same text in the text field at the bottom of the screen.
