Hi, To answer your question: no, linux does not need /boot as a mount point. It may just as well be an ordinary directory. You don't even need a /boot directory. You may install the kernel image elsewhere as long as lilo is configured and installed correctly, so the image can be loaded during boot time. /etc/fstab is a configuration file. As such is does not mount anything, /sbin/mount does. However, somewhere during the boot sequence mount -a is executed, resulting in the mounting of all filesystems in fstab except for those labelled noauto. Check out the mount and fstab manpages. newroot. My question was if Linux needs /boot as a mount point. I guess I should just try it and see.
I think youn need /boot mounted only to run lilo (and to install a new kernel on it, of course). ----------------->>>> That's sorta what I was asking. The fstab doesn't do the mounting then who does?
