I have had similar problems. When you install a kernel different from the
one that you booted from (i.e. not the default choice during installation)
the installer does not re-run mk_initrd to include the required modules
before rebooting. My solution was to use the standard kernel and then after
installation and before reboot install the desired kernel, mk_initrd, run
lilo and all is well.

well it makes no sense to me and I can't remember this ever being
Eventually I got it installed via hard disk but I found a bug.
Bug Report:
installation via floppy disk from hard disk.
/dev/hda 4 gig drive to be installed /dev/hdb 17 gig with suse ftp tree /suse/i386/7.2/ ext2 format
Installed hda drive with reiserfs and it went along and worked then installed kernel. Did some more config and then comes the usual "Yast has to be started to finish configuring." Yast starts and then asks what method of installation to use. It only lists /dev/hda as valid drive and doesn't
required. list
/dev/hdb to install from. I suspect since hdb was ext2 and hda was reiser ext2 module wasn't loaded. Having no net connection or cd rom I had to abort this procedure because I couldn't specify a valid install method.

Did mke2fs the whole drive and copied suse ftp onto it via local mount (mount -t ext2 /dev/hdd /usr/local/ftp/pub). I swap it into other machine and try to install suse onto 4 gig drive via hard disk option. It recognizes the drive when I specify it /dev/hdb but once I tell it /suse/i386/7.2/(suse/) it cannot find image.
to do an installation from hard disk, after you copy the files to /usr/local/ftp/pub do:
cd /usr/local/ftp/pub/suse/suse gzip -dc < images/root > setup/inst-img
