Hi, I have had trouble installing the latest Lilo version on two laptops. The install was based on SuSE 7.1. I also tried compiling latter lilo versions. All attempts were based on installing ililo n the MBR. When booting, the bios would not recognise the disk at all. I ended up installing a boot manager in the mbr on one of the Notebooks and having that point to the root partition. Lilo would then work. Originally I had SuSE 6.3 installed on the other notebook and lilo functioned correctly on the mbr. Once I upgraded to 7.1 (fresh install) lilo would not work. Same problems as described above. I ended up using the lilo.rpm from SuSE 6.3 after installing SuSE 7.1 on the laptops and it functions correctly. The only problem is I'm missing the nice startup screen and the menu. Hi Chris,
Yep yast2 I can't remember if I used yast1 but I know yast2 was used a lot I think I installed SuSE 7.2 (6 or 7 times).
I used YAST1 for a while network stuff and editing the admin side etc.
I also tried to correct it by midifying the lilo.conf too The only way in the end was to create a small dos partition.

Matt

I have had a simular problem, I solved it by creating a small DOS partition then installed again. for me SuSE seemed to seek out a DOS partition or a valid MBR, I tried fdisk /MBR and then installed with no DOS partition this failed to work, I tried to install with lilo pointing to the MBR and also again with it point to a partition all with only linux partitions.
Hmmm... was this all being done through YaST2? Admittedly I've never usesd YaST2 to install any version of SuSE, and I don't have SuSE 7.2, but this shouldn't be a problem.
Did you try to get this working by editing /etc/lilo.conf and rerunning LILO?
The only way I could get it to work was to create a DOS partition then reinstall so now mine works 100% with no floppy at all.
This is very strange and shouldn't be necessary. But if it works... :-\
