Hi Peter, Interesting, I experienced the same after installing XFree86 4.1. I am using the kdm login. The problem is related to the new X version. When switching to console mode it seems that the monitor is no longer able to sync the signal. In my case I have found two workarounds: 1) Disable the frame buffer console. You will lose the graphic screens in console mode. This is done by adapting the vga line in /etc/lilo.conf: vga = normal #771 771 is the old value. It indicates a 800x600@256 framebuffer (see /usr/src/linux/Documentation/fb/vesafb.txt). Don't forget to run /sbin/lilo afterwards! 2) I have a matrox millennium G400 DH graphics card. With XFree86 4.1 the mgahal module is loaded. Disabling this module solved the problem. In /etc/X11/XF86Config, add the following line to the Section "Device": Option "NoHal" The disadvantage of this solution is that some vendor specific features are no longer accessible. I am not sure which, though. Both methods require a reboot. I can imagine there are more solutions, like disabling hardware acceleration or lowering the color depth... Hope this helps, Tim On Tue, Sep 11, 2001 at 11:41:50PM -0400, Peter Hiltz wrote:
Then startx, do things in X, and logout of X. The screen goes blank. (It doesn't matter what window manager I am using; I've tried KDE, Enlightenment, Windowmaker and Gnome). The computer has not hung; it will respond to commands typed in blind. If I type in startx again, we are back to X-Windows no problem. Logout -- back to blank screen. It stays blank if I Alt-F2 to another console.
