i'm installing 7.1 on a pent pro/64ram/4gig HD; installation >>of 'default with office' goes fine until yast2 gets to the X11 >>configuration, when i select a resolution and try to test it, nothing >>happens. i can't finish the X config because yast2 wont let me >>continue w/o testing. so i skipped X config, figuring i could do it >>after the install. when i log in (as root) and run sax, i get a >>messed up screen (four red-ish, heavily pixelated boxes along upper >>edge of screen). i can't ctrl-c out of it,
But surely you can use [CTRL]+[ALT]+[BACKSPACE] ?
i didn't know that would get me out of sax, and the problem hasn't recurred since then. (if it does, i'll try it.)
and i can't go to one of the other tty's.
[CTRL]+[ALT]+[F2] isn't working? Does your keyboard numlock light turn >on and off when you tap your numlock key?
the numlock does work, ctrl-alt-Fx doesn't. the lockup on sax is only temporary -- after a reboot it doesn't happen. when i run sax, i'm getting errors: Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/XF86Config Device section "Device[0]" must have a Driver line. (EE) Problem parsing the config file (EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile() Fatal server error: no screens found XIO: fatal IO error 104 (Connection reset by peer) on X server ":0.0" after 0 requests (0 known processed) with 0 events remaining.
Odd. Is there a reason you can't use SuSE 7.2? Have you looked up that
card on XFree's web site or on SuSE's hardware list?
i can't find 7.2 in stores locally (florida, US,) but will probably get it in the near future (along w/ a DVD drive, to facilitate the install). is Xfree86 4.x included in 7.2? (i'm on a dialup in win and am putting off the headache of configuring the net connection for some other day.)
- how can i get the proper specs for the vid card? (searched google >>for the vid card info and got random hits...has anyone used this vid >>card before?)
I have used a 4 MB STB card before and didn't have any trouble. Try >the STB web site maybe. I really think X4 is a better idea if possible.
STB's website has a note for stockholders about being sold to nvidia and not much else. which x server did you use on that card? suse's online hardware db doesn't list the card, although there is a 'generic' listing. xfree86.org doesn't list any STB cards at all. the listings in sax indicate that basically all STB cards use S3 or SVGA -- i've installed both to no avail. what do i need to add/change in the config file to get it working? -yuk bon _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp
