a friend in our local lug got a satellite connection and of course the device they gave him was usb and only had windows drivers, but he did some poking around on it and it turns out the usb plug was just a usb to ethernet adapter plugged into an ethernet port on the device. he took that off, hooked up his linux box via ethernet and away he went. one thing he did do that made a big difference was setup a caching dns server. seems as though the udp traffic wasnt working to well off the satellite connection.
