From examining my backup logs I've noticed that tar gets quit upset when coming across softlinks that point to ".". Actually, I can't see the reason why anyone would create a soft link that points to "." and assume it must be a mistake, but these files do exist. For example:
/usr/share/doc/sdb/en/sdb -> . tar(1) resolves the link to the current directory, then traverses the symlink again, and then resolves to CWD again, etc, etc, etc. The log shows the file as: /usr/share/doc/sdb/en/sdb/sdb/sdb/sdb/sdb/ ... and so on So beware of this one folks.
