The reason of your frustration is that this variable has moved to /etc/rc.config.d/sendmail.rc.config
I don't know why it is not reflected in docs. If you try to change the value of the variable
through YaST, it is found, but YaST does not tell you that it moved to a different file.
As SuSE says, have fun :-)
