Yes, you can but you need to process these to make them known to X.
Look in the script:
/usr/X11R6/bin/fetchmsttfonts
The fonts must be located at:
/usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/truetype or /usr/X11R6/lib/X11/fonts/Type1
