standalone vs. connected laptop

I have a VAIO laptop I just set up as a dual boot. Sometimes I have it
connected to my home LAN, other times it is not. When booting
standalone, is there a flag I can test EARLY in the boot process which
will tell me I'm not connected? I'd like to avoid loading up a bunch of
network stuff (like NFS and NIS, for example) when I boot in the field.
