Hello all, I am new to this list and to Suse so I hope I am doing this all
right. Mainly I hope this is plain text as I have never used Kmail before,
although I am pretty sure I got it all hooked up proper. I have two
questions regarding Suse 7.2 personal.
1) When I installed, I had to use a VESA preset for my monitor which I then
had to further customize to get it to work. I am just moving from a very
short stay with RedHat7.1, and before that I had been using RedHat6.2 for a
long time with no trouble. In both of those, my monitor was shows as
'Undetected Monitor', and set to run at 31.5kHz and 60Hz, (I dont remember
which is vertical and which is horizontal at the moment but I beliece 60 was
horizontal). With this settup my monitor never had any trouble at all, but
when I came to Suse it wouldnt load the installer in 640x480 @ 16bit even
though thats what the monitor runs at, and is currently running at. I had to
customize the VESA 640x480 @ 72Hz to run at 31.5 and 60 to get it to work,
but once done it seems to be doing fine. My question is, can I rely on the
settings from RH in Suse? I am going to be replacing the monitor by
christmas with one that I know will work, but should I be concerned about the
way its settup now? The main reason that this concerns me is
2) Every time I shutdown, and I mean so far every time excluding the very
first it tells me that the kdm failed to shut down. Everything else goes
along saying done, but kdm fails everytime. Any reason why this may be? If
its the monitor problem I already asked about then that is soon to be solved.
My linux monitor is a Dell VC2 that is impossible to find any real info on,
and it just fell in my lap so I dont have manuals. It will run in windows at
1024x768 @ 16bit, but in linux only 640x480. My brothers box has a 15",
(this ones a 14"), that is a Optiquest V55. I didnt check in Suse yet, but
RH6.2 detects it no prob and it will run at the desired resolution, so if
need be I will just take it and make him live with it till christmas when I
buy him a new one. Advice? Thanks in advance,
AA
