This worked great. I'm up and running. This must have been the "file you
need" someone mentioned in previous posts. Unfortunately this solution was
given "off-line". That's generally a bad idea since there will always be
another someone like me looking for new ways to break things. :)

You just put the patch in /usr/lib/vmware/modules/source, take a copy of the original vmmon.tar for backup (the new file works *only* with 2.4.7 and later), gunzip the patch and rename it vmmon.tar. vmware-config.pl should then work, - though some people report compilation warnings. <snip>
