I have a small (3 comuters total) network at home connected to the internet through one computer using an ADSL connection. In the past I've just used a simple ipchains command to masquerade the connection for other computers which worked fine. I turned off all the incoming services and didn't see the need for more advanced security as I'm not trying to run a server. I have just upgraded (actually re-installed) to SuSE 7.2 with 2.4.4 kernel. The same ipchains rule now works ok for web browsing and (I think) ftp downloads and telnet connections. However when I try to check email on either a pop or imap server, it fails with the message: " The current command did not succeed: The mail server responded: Protocol Error: Invalid message set in FETCH command." That was from netscape trying to read mail on an IMAP server. A similar message occurs using KMAIL to access a POP server. Both mail servers are accessed with no problem from the computer with a direct connection. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Bernie Gardner bernie.gardner@verizon.net
