As I understood it they weren't talking about that. There is some id or as-reply-to (something like that) field in the headers of the message, and the some mail agents start new threads via that. Even if the subject field is changed completely (that is starting a new thread via reply), the id or as-reply-to tag stays there and the new thread is part of the old thread.
