OK, I'm trying to configure a modem for Suse 7.0. Its a standard external US Robotics job. I use the Yast modem config program, which locates and communicates with my modem in an OK fashion. I setup my ISP account, but when I start wvdial, I get the following error:
CONNECT 33600/ARQ --> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately. --> Starting pppd at Thu Jul 12 16:14:01 2001 --> pid of pppd: 9798 --> Disconnecting at Thu Jul 12 16:14:24 2001 --> The PPP daemon has died: A modem hung up the phone (exit code = 16) --> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail. --> Try again and look into /var/log/messages and the wvdial and pppd --> man pages for more information.
And this is in /var/log/messages:

Jul 12 16:14:24 munin pppd[9798]: Exit. I had aready uninstalled ppp_ssl and reinstalled ppp as per the suse support database advise. This fixed the problems I had initially but not this one. I have even tried getting the latest ppp package from suse 7.2 (of the ftp site) to no avail. I have also tried setting up kinternet via Yast 2, and using kppp.
This is really annoying me. I'm going to try another modem, and another SuSE 7 instal I have which has more of a selective installation (this machine has the "Almost Everything" install). Failing that, can anybody help me?

Basically it cannot find the module aliased for char-major-108 If ya running a 2.4.x kernel this is due to a change in the modules used for PPP connections. If ya edit your /etc/modules.conf file and make some changes it should work for ya just fine. I'll list the changes I had to make below your should be simiiar if not exactly the same. change the alias for char-major-108 to ppp_async change alias for tty-ldisc-3 to ppp_async change alias for ppp0 to ppp_async change alias for ppp1 to ppp_async THis shoud get things running for ya. If not email me directly. All this is contained in the /usr/src/linux/Documentation/changes.txt file... I really think this should be added to the Support Database SuSE. I've repeated this to the list at least three times. There has to be more than 4 poor souls still using dial on demand. Just my two cents...
