Running under the older KDE is certainly easier.

Several alternatives, all involving logging out first.Then:

1) in the login screen select "Login from console" (or similar). 
or
2) alt+ctrl+f1
login as root
type init 3

Then, do the installation and type kdm

That's it. Enjoy KDE2.2-beta1
