That is the point. I never go out and grab a package from some site simply because I won't waste my time on screwing up my systems. I always grab the tarball because I know the package mess that exists today. If one has to compile software it to me seems to be a sign that there is problems existing in the package systems as they are today. If SuSE would work with both deb and rpm I wouldn't be against it but as said before as they exist today and distros handle this with their branching its a mess which needs to be fixed. This is why I am so adament against any work being done regarding GUIs. There is much more important stuff to be fixed. I find it far more important to make the package systems cross compatible so any person of any distro can go out and grab any package and NOT screw up their system. The day I can go out grab a qt2 deb package and a licq redhat rpm package they automatically convert into my distro package and install correctly I be a happy camper (for 5 min). mk

I am sorry if this creates a huge thread but I think it was time to bring up this question again.
A few months ago people asked if SuSE could switch over to the debian package format. It was mentioned that considerations were made towards/against this. I wonder where we now stand on this.
I like to see a switch towards deb being made. I figure with gcc 3.0 being released and probably being used for SuSE 8.0 it would be the perfect time to as well make the packaging switch at the same time. I would welcome this. So far SuSE packages are something created in house and a mystery to the general user as they are not general RedHat packages either. I think switching over to deb would move the packages back into the general user domain and as well prove SuSE was interested in setting/using standards and not contributing to creating special branches of a good which is useless for other(-distro) Linux users. Fact is I like to see some of the special(-distro) package formats out there die and a (one or two) standard(s) appear. With efforts as the LSB moving ahead strongly I just don't see why SuSE should have a special package format.
