I seem to remember from a previous question that the kde-config file only became a binary with 2.1. in 2.0 it was a text config file in /opt/kde2/share/config. Perhaps this is the problem here. There was a solution, but I forget what it was. Search the mail list archive, it wasn't that long ago. On Friday 08 June 2001 19:07, Mark Hounschell wrote:

The file kde-config is from the kdelibs package. Is in installed?
well rpm -q kde-config returns nothing.
As I wrote below "rpm -q kdelibs" If you are (successfully) running kde2.x then it IS installed.
What package are you trying to compile?
The kde-user list is also a good place to get info on kde packages and such. The file in question "kde-config" should be in /opt/kde2/bin/kde-config.
kde-config --help returns nothing
I don't think I have kde-config installed. Im running kde-2.0.1 and I looked on the CD's and cannot find the rpm. What do you think I should do now?
"rpm -q kdelibs" should show kdelibs-2.1.2-0 or kdelibs-2.1.1-?. If it is then I would suggest in addition to using --prefix=/opt/kde2 there is should be an option for specifying either the kdelibs/kdedirs or something like --extra-libs/--extra-includes and point them to /opt/kde2/lib and /opt/kde/include.....
