You do not say what make of drive you have, but for IBM there is the "drive fitness test" which I have found helpful and which runs from a bootable CD (there are instructions for linux). I can't immediately recall the URL, but I am attaching the welcome page, which I d/l'd with the software. I dare say that other manufacturers have equivalents.
