Both Linux and FreeBSD seem to be UNIX clones.
Fairly correct...
How then do they differ ?
Apart from the spelling? ;-) The kernel is different between them, as is the license... The difference in the kernel has a knock-on effect for driver support, as well as for things that operate at the kernel level (such as, for example, the LVS - www.linuxvirtualserver.org)
Does FreeBSD have various "distros" like Linux ?
Not really, although it is one of three BSD's - OpenBSD which is aimed at security, NetBSD and FreeBSD, one of which concentrates purely on the i386 platform, the other is cross-platform (can't remember which is which tho'). They all stem originally from the BSD UN*X code developed at UCB in the 70's, and while they now each have a different kernel, work done on one will normally make it into the others -- James Ogley, Unix System Administrator, Pinnacle.Net james.ogley@pinnacle.co.uk +44 20 8731 3619 Listening to the sound of the coming rain... *********************************************************************** CONFIDENTIALITY.
