Shocked at SuSE 7.1 Upgrade Package

I just got a copy of SuSE 7.1 Upgrade. The packaging is almost worthless --
not anything about upgrading.
I have heard there are major differences between >=7.0 and 7.1. So would it
not seem logical to majorly document exactly how to upgrade any early version so
you don't break everything.
I am upgrading primarily to get glibc 2.2 which more and more packages demand,
and I don't have the stomach to try upgrading glibc.
I find one reference in the CD pack saying to use the Update feature of Yast2.
Frankly, I have not been impressed by Yast2.
What are the major cautions before I begin this venture?
