If you want 1.4 then I would just download it from the suse ftp site. You can install it from yast all in 1 fell swoop. It's pretty simple..and I know what you mean about the RPM thing. Hell, until about a year ago. I never installed anything but the base system via RPM..
To tell you the truth I wasn't all that impressed with Gnome 1.4 and I had hope to be. I use to be a big Gnome person..but the last 6 months or so I have really come to the conclusion that KDE2 is put together better and just more solid. You mileage may vary.
That's my fear. I *really* want to like it but I'm afraid I won't. I'll wait until the Ximian version is out and make my judgment then. I think I'll take a look at KDE while I'm waiting. :-)
