Fred Miller sent me a cordial correction of my attitude about this. Evidently CUPS does not handle some printers well, or at all. Lexmark Z series in particular. Let me rephrase it. Jim specifically mentioned HP Laserjet 4L printer and 2 people told him to drop CUPS. CUPS supports HP's out of the box with generic type ppd files. If one searches and finds a more detailed ppd file, he can almost certainly take advantage of all or most of the printer's features, all controlled through a web browser. Many ppd files are available for weird and regular printers at www.linuxprinting.org. WinXX ppd files (they do work) can be located at M$ and Adobe. So, in short, unless a person describes a printer that is known not to work with CUPS, it is a great disservice to hammer CUPS in general terms. It is a great printing tool.
