Why run fetchmail from cron? Isn't it enough to start it as daemon
and specify poll interval?

I do it system-wide with the following command:

/usr/bin/fetchmail -d 300 -a -L /var/log/fetchmail -f /root/.fetchmailrc

Fetchmail runs as daemon and every 300 seconds poll POP accounts at ISP.
