Yep. make config, make dep, make clean, make bzImage (or bzlilo), make
modules, make modules_install, make install, a few cp commands, run lilo,
and viola! And RPM's, thought those were supposed to take care of that
stuff. At least vendor specific rpms into the same vendor specific
distro/version. But, heck what do I know, I'm a newbie!

There should be no issue with a kernel upgrade unless the distro is
negligent
in it's design.....

make xconfig
make deps
make clean
make bzlilo
make install

The RPM's for the init upgrades and modprobe upgrades and the like
should just work - regardless of the 2.4 kernel version.
