There should be no issue with a kernel upgrade unless the distro is negligent
in it's design.....
make xconfig
make deps
make clean
make bzlilo
make install
The RPM's for the init upgrades and modprobe upgrades and the like
should just work - regardless of the 2.4 kernel version.
