Hello list friends, I too arrive at the same conclusion that only the manual installation works. Although the bootable CD I made from downloading files works quite well, linuxrc does not recognize it as a SuSE disk and the automatic installation cannot start. The recognition algorithm is a SuSE secret !? Happy easter, Andrei On Mon, Apr 16, 2001 at 02:41:22PM +0200, O'Bieito wrote:

Hi there I have just finished my "half-upgrade", I guess my system now is something like "SuSE 7.0.99" or sth like that.
I did the upgrade downloading almost everything from the ftp, trying to reconstruct the CDs ... absolutely NO WAY. I told it before but I will keep on saying it : <rant> SuSE YOU HAVE MADE ME FEEL LIKE A CRACKER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MY 3 YEARS LINUX EXPERIENCE. THIS IS NOT A LINUX EXP, THIS IS SOMETHING I EXPERIENCED MANY TIMES BEFORE, BUT WITH A DIFFERENT SYSTEM ... </rant>
So that said I'll comment I used a "Brute Force" approach for upgrading, after reading some docs around I decided not to use their advice. I tried it in the laptop first and it worked. So my steps where more or less :
- - Boot machine with boot disk ( /images ). - - Upgrade all packages in folder /suse/a1 ( base system ) plus all things relative to yast. ( folder /suse/yast1 ) using the expert installation mode ( neither could I use ANY of the other methods, u know, pirates have two use this approach. This is free software after all. - - Upgrade kernel ( to 2218 or 242 as u wish ) - - Reboot machine and go on upgrading folders using the 'expert'( one by one of course, so that you can remember you did not pay for the upgrade ( you paid for 7.0 just 4 months ago ) and think you are collaborating in SuSE's sinking because you are a cracker and a robber. - -After 3 or 4 nice hours doing this intelligent job of marking packets and pressing F10 to proceed ... - - Only troubles I had where with kde and qt compatibilities and the sort, after re-installing some packages in certain orders u get things going ( mostly qt libs and kde2 packs gave trouble ). So here I am with a wounded system that is working. I'll try to put this instructions in my webpage, together with a wounded Gecko and a bigger rant for SuSE GmbH, of course I'll put my personal registration number there, and also my MSDN number ( oh sorry I was mistaking the two companies, sorry ;)
If this sounds as it sounds it is because I am deeply sad and annoyed with this issue. Couple weeks ago I was in the spanish Linux-Expo in Madrid; there is NO WAY you can buy that 2 or 3 versions upgrade in Spain... no firm sells it here.. and SuSE GmbH says that "you'd better not order anything from us directly since it will take more than 3 weeks shipping"
Oh damn I am really sad and angry but at last I have my damned kinternet with sort-of working multiple ISDN providers, the ONLY real issue for me to upgrade.
BTW yast has some nice improvements, also Yast2 is a little more than a toy now.
