That was what I was hoping to find out, and I now can understand the command line parameters and how to better the man page - so to Tor I say Tack :-) On Friday 13 April 2001 09:01, Tor Sigurdsson wrote:

Ok, maybe is I was a little to vague in my last help request - so let me try again. I have looked at the unix/man page for ifconfig. What I'm getting lost with is the command line and syntax that i would use to change my mtu.
For instance, what would the line look like "ifconfig eth0 ? ? ?" - what follows? I'm also at a lose to find out what the "-a -i -v -s" represents.
Might someone write a mock line with an outline of the command syntax? And if possible tell me what the command prefix/modifiers -a -i -v -s mean?
Thanx in advance. Curtis Rey
Hello Curtis,
This is what I understand from the manpage ( and from what I have learnt in the past :)
- -a = All ( ifconfig -a : shows the configuration of all interfaces ) - -s = Status ( sort of... ) gives the following output on "ifconfig -s"
Iface MTU Met RX-OK RX-ERR RX-DRP RX-OVR TX-OK TX-ERR TX-DRP TX-OVR Flg eth0 1500 0 3518 0 0 0 3334 0 0 0 BRU lo 3924 0 1402 0 0 0 1402 0 0 0 LRU
Strangely enough, "-i" seems to be unsupported, even tho it's listed in the parameter array.
My only guess for "-v" is Verbose, although it shows no difference....
And finally, to change the mtu on eth0:
/sbin/ifconfig eth0 mtu 1532
