Agreed, thus:

shutdown is more efficient if you take into account the time for the
unavoidable fsck at boot time. The tracing of lost files. The restoring from
the backup or the reinstalling and configuring of your system.

But halt is if you do not take this into account.
Running ' sync && sync && sync && sync && halt -fp' works very quick and not
really unsafe on my reiserfs system.

But only use this in case of FIRE!
