Okay, that finally did the trick. I went to the nvidia website:
http://www.nvidia.com/Products/Drivers.nsf/Linux.html
and downloaded the three files:
NVIDIA_kernel-0.9-769.suse71.i386.rpm
NVIDIA_GLX-0.9-769.suse71.i386.rpm
README.suse71
They are specific to SuSE 7.0 vs. SuSE 7.1, and are toward the bottom of
the page, under the Red Hat and Mandrake downloads. I made a short
script out of the README file and installed the drivers. Finally,
following the directions at the SuSe support site:
http://sdb.suse.de/sdb/en/html/wengel_glx_nv.html
I added the following line to my Modules section of /etc/X11/XF86Config
:
Load "glx"
That came up with no hanging and no error messages.
